What does madness taste like? It tastes like everything Dr. Steve Brule gets his hands on. He’s the wild-haired doctor of your most surreal nightmare, the bagboy with a crush, who crushes the case with finesse and comic ferocity. He can do no wrong. He’s on Channel 5, for your health.
Today’s video shows the good doctor making sushi. It’s a riot. And it’s perfect. And it’s horrifying. I think the masterminds behind Dr. Brule have perfected the art of creating truly unsettling yet satisfying and genuinely funny comedy. But it’s best to be an observer, because if any of us actually entered that Brule universe, we’d probably find ourselves pulling out our eyeballs or running for the hills in horror. He’s infectious, unpredictable and beyond reason.
So, enjoy. It’s a truly inspirational video for me in terms of comic sensibility and if you haven’t checked out the later seasons of Check it Out, they are some of the best (and creepiest) television I’ve ever seen. Like I said, they are utterly dark, but there’s laughter in the darkness, unnerving, middle-age men giggling, cut with static and bad music, awkward pauses that linger forever. It’s grainy there and you just might be checking behind your back before you go to bed, making sure no little Brule-ghosts crawled in through the heating vent, through the back door. Because they’re hungry. And curious.
In other words, this is an encounter with pure genius. Up for some sushi? I am. Some Domo ArigaDIE!!! sushi. On the house.
